"More than a holy book, the Qur'an represents for Muslims the very words of God that were dictated to Muhammad by the archangel Gabriel" (The Making of the West 251). It is stated that the last verses of the surah depicted here are created with ink, color, and gold on parchment. The use of gold in the text would have shown how wealthy a nation the Islamic Empire had become during this time period, and that its resources could be spent on other things as opposed to barely making by.
