ABOUT THE golden globe:
Art will always be relevant to our society. Our time periods include the Greek Golden Age from circa 500 B.C.E. to circa 400 B.C.E., The Golden Ages of the Heirs of Rome from 600 to 750 C.E., our final time period is the period of Crisis and Renaissance from 1340 to 1492 C.E., focusing on the Renaissance. “Despite nearly constant warfare, fifth-century B.C.E. Greeks (especially in Athens) created their most famous innovations in architecture, art and theater” (Making of the West 77). Interesting pieces that can be gleaned from the Greek Golden Age include art in many forms, as mentioned in the previous quote. Particularly in Islamic lands, prosperity was able to influence the art, especially when “[under] the Umayyad caliphate, which lasted from 661 to 750, the Muslim world became a state, its capital at Damascus in Syria” (Making of the West 255). The prosperity that was able to form under this caliphate increased the ability for buildings and art to become a priority. Our final time period of the Renaissance is well known for the art that was created. It was a rebirth of previous ideologies that were used throughout the classical past. “In reality, Renaissance writers and artists built much of their work on medieval precedents, but they rarely acknowledged this fact… Architects and Artists admired ancient Athens and Rome, but they also modified these classical models, melding them with medieval artistic traditions” (The Making of the West 421, 423).
Our project is centered on art throughout the Golden Ages. This includes Greek, Roman, Islamic, and lastly the Medieval Renaissance golden ages. Our intention is to find correlations between these times by means of technology, culture, and social advancements. Art is a very pivotal component to a society, by researching communities present within in each of these societies, we can make a general assumption as to why these “golden ages” actually occurred. Art can be used to inform the viewer on how to perform a certain task, mark an important event in history, tell of an important figure, or royal family, and finally depict what these places truly looked like even in periods of war. With art we can explore these ancient societies in greater detail, because it allows us to have a visual aid in researching the past. By making our main question about how the art present in Golden Ages connect to the time period, we can educate ourselves about these time periods and find out how they were able to prosper to the point of reaching a golden age.
